Vacation Bible School 2017

THANK YOU to all of our volunteers!

What an amazing week we had in VBS! We had 30 children, 12 Middle School and High School Helpers, and over 20 adults from MCC, all joining together in our outer space-themed 2017 Vacation Bible School.

We began each day with an installment of a fun story about “Star Truck,” a space ship piloted by Lieutenant Jenny Smash, and her faithful robot pal, delivering a cargo of 671 live Muons, helped out by our old friend Idaho Brown (whom they borrowed from his vacation in Jamaica). They needed Idaho Brown because their naturalist robot was accidentally incinerated (that’s another story).

In Art, we painted t-shirts, made UFOs, and decorated frames for our photo-booth pictures to share with our families.

In Music, we saw a map of the music of 2001: A Space Odyssey, read stories, performed puppet shows, played musical games, combined music and art with Gustav Holst’s “The Planets”, played mirror games, learned how to conduct a musical piece, and told a story and game from Jamaica (because we borrowed Idaho Brown from a beach vacation in Jamaica).

We meditated with Pastor Jim and studied Bible stories about creation, humanity’s history of salvation, and the resurrection.

We enjoyed snacks, fellowship & outside games with friends new.

In Science, we started out learning about the Sun, Earth, and Moon, making our own craters, and looking through a telescope. Then we learned about our Solar System by building our own Solar System models. We also studied space by experimenting with a vacuum jar, finding out just how empty space really is. The most exciting part was launching different kinds of rockets, including some “fire rockets” that took off from the MCC parking lot, headed – “way up there” but we also got to build, launch and even bring home our very own “air rockets!”

It all wrapped up with a parent program on Thursday night.

Needless to say, this amazing event couldn’t happen without the efforts of so many volunteers, doing a wide variety of tasks, from behind the scenes jobs like planning, decorating the church and providing snacks to more visible roles like  acting in skits, teaching classes, or wrangling the little ones. A huge thank you to all of the volunteers who assisted with this fun week, and to all of the children who participated!

The 2017 edition may be over, but don’t miss next summer’s Vacation Bible School!
